Web Design & Development
Website design and development can be daunting, whether it’s your first time having a website built or you’ve been tasked with getting an existing website updated, there are many options and conflicting advice.
How much does a website cost? Who can you trust to build a website? Will you be locked into a contract? What is the best way to build a website? Can I update a website myself? We will answer these questions on this page or if you have a specific question, please get in touch.
Need a new website but not sure where to start? Already have a website that is not performing or working? We can help.
If you’re reading this, it is quite likely you’ll relate to some of the following frustrations:
- Your business needs a website but you’re not ‘technical’ and do not know where to begin
- You’ve previously had a website built, but it doesn’t do what you need it to do
- You’d like more control over your website content, but the way it was designed and built makes it almost impossible to update easily
- You do not know how to update your own website because a previous developer did not, or will not, teach you how to do this
- You’d really like a bespoke designed website but most companies will not give you an idea of cost without you contacting them and this is off-putting to you
- Your current website offers users a poor experience and you’re losing business to your competitors
AllDesignOnline Solves Your Website Frustrations
At AllDesignOnline we have a different approach to most when working with a client to build a website which we define as three simple steps.
For a website to work well you need:
- A clearly defined purpose for your website, it’s intended audience and your ongoing content and marketing
- A website that you can change easily, grow and improve or adapt rapidly when needed
- An understanding that website content should be constantly reviewed, improved and added to either by yourselves using the skills we can teach you, or by us if you prefer, to keep it relevant and engaging for your audience
With these three simple and effective steps clearly defined, we can build your successful website together.
A website created by AllDesignOnline has a clear goal which is to create an easy-to-use website, that clearly communicates your message and is not dependant, unless requested, for us as a design agency to keep your site content up-to-date.
This allows you the freedom to continuously add to your website yourself without incurring additional ongoing costs and drive it’s direction forward independently.
What are the key processes in Website design & development you should consider?
Talk direct to an AllDesignOnline Web Designer/Developer (NOT a Salesperson)
This conversation is to learn more about the challenges you’re facing, identify the type of help you need and what kind of solution would work best for you.
We’ll also talk discuss some of the other key items, for example:
- What information you currently have or may need to acquire for your content
- What your long-term aims are for the website and how future updates may impact the decisions now to ensure necessary costs and development can be avoided
- Who is going to update the content long-term and what training they may require
- Any special functionality you may need that is specific to your business needs
Scope, Design and Development
Using the information provided, AllDesignOnline produce a scope of work which defines the following:
- Outline of requirements
- Proposed solution
- Content source information availability and required elements
- Project execution timeline
- Project costs and terms
Once the scope of work and costs are agreed, gathering of source information begins along with the initial design concept. The design concept is presented to you for review and any design revisions that are requested are made and the design is submitted back to you again for review.
Upon signoff of the design, the development of the site begins on our server which is not indexed by search engines. This allows us to share a web address with you to review progress without it appearing in the public domain. Content and pages are added to the site and upon completion, final review from you is requested on both the visual aspects and the user journey through your new site, with requested adjustments incorporated into the development site.
Website Launch and Training
Now the exciting part – your new website goes live! Once the site is live we will monitor it’s performance to ensure that everything is functioning correctly in the initial days after launch and correct any issues if they arise.
If required as part of the scope of work, we will train your team (typically via video call) on two key aspects of your new website:
- How to manage and update your new website using the content editor
- How to check traffic and visitor’s to your website
Website SEO and optimisation – what you need to know.
Running a website should be viewed much like running a car. If you do not maintain it or invest time and money into it, it eventually becomes tired, inefficient and unreliable.
A new website created by AllDesignOnline is optimised from the beginning and designed to perform well in Search Engines such as Google and Bing. As the website becomes established it is important that you invest the time into measuring the visitors (we can show you how to do this or provide the results to you) and understanding how they interact with your website.
This enables you to see:
- What is working or not working well
- Areas that people exit from your website
- Are people converting (e.g. have they reached a certain page you’d like them to reach and performed a task such as filling in a form?)
- Sections of the site that need improvement or content changes
As you add new content it is important that this is structured correctly and optimised so that it performs well.
AllDesignOnline perform a ‘fundamental’ Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). This covers all of the accepted standards for general SEO, i.e. ensuring correct page structures and heading weights, meta tags, external links have the correct Urchin Tracking Module (UTM) etc.
AllDesignOnline are not however ‘SEO Experts’. Just as a builder understands construction, it does not qualify them as an architect or civil engineer.
Many website designers and developers will present themselves as ‘SEO experts’ who can get you to the top of Google! Some of them can, but the vast majority are not telling you the truth – they are lying to you and probably themselves. They are not experts in SEO, the kind of expert level that can get a particular page in front of a specific audience and get it converting – that is a separate full-time skill in itself.
This is why for clients who require the next level of SEO, for those targeting a specific result that goes beyond ‘fundamental’, we refer them to a trusted company we work with, who’s sole business function is providing expert SEO.
There is no commission for AllDesignOnline doing this, we simply know that in an industry that is plagued by false promises and pretenders, good, honest people are hard to find.
You’ve had your new website built by AllDesignOnline, what next? Who looks after it and carries out the ongoing maintenance?
The majority of websites built by AllDesignOnline are created using WordPress which is the number one Worldwide website platform for providing a stable and well supported content management system (CMS). We find that it is versatile enough for most clients needs, with vast online support and resources available, it means that should a client wish to fully run and manage their website, or should the wish to move on to another design company in the future, the work we have created can be continued and supported – a client is not tied to AllDesignOnline.
We do also create websites using ASP .Net, but that is usually for very niche websites – please contact us for more information.
As with most technologies, it is important to keep things up-to-date to ensure that any potential vulnerabilities that may have been discovered have been closed off and that you’re getting the most out of the new features as they become available in WordPress.
AllDesignOnline offer a straightforward service. Once a month we will back-up your website and send a copy to your desired location (i.e. SharePoint, OneDrive, DropBox etc), we will update the core version of WordPress and plug-ins where applicable, then check to ensure the updates have no adverse effects on your website.
How much does this cost?
At the time of writing, the cost for this is £45.00 per month, invoiced every quarter (£135.00).
What if there is a problem?
If as a result of an update there is an issue, which is extremely rare, we will attempt to resolve the issue if takes less than an hour. If it is more in depth, we will roll the website back to before the update and discuss with you the issue and advise the cost to rectify.
Below are some companies we have worked with to help fulfil their website needs, creating bespoke website designs with easy to use content management, helping them to make the most of their online presence:
Let’s get to the bit everyone wants to know – how much does a Website cost?
Website design and development costs can vary a lot depending on some key factors. These typically are:
- The size of the website, how many pages ae needed and how those pages are structured
- What content is available or can be provided to us or how much content needs to be originated by AllDesignOnline. If there is content to be originated, what kind of content is it? A small infographic for example is quicker than a complex animated video sequence to produce
- How much code customisation is required to make your website function? Is it straight forward content pages or are there special features required, for example a bespoke coded tool for calculating your product costs?
- How much existing knowledge you already have with regards to updating a website and using a Content Management System
Whilst it is true that every project is different, that doesn’t help you right now. You’d like to know roughly…
how much does a typical AllDesignOnline website cost?
Typically you should budget:
- Small bespoke website:
Around 10 pages, bespoke design and build, allowing for two premium plug-ins (menu system and contact form plug-ins), approximately: £1250.00 – £1800.00
- Medium bespoke website:
Around 18 pages, bespoke design and build including some complex design elements, allowing for two premium plugins (menu system and contact form plug-ins), approximately: £1950.00 – £2800.00
- Large bespoke website:
Around 25 pages, bespoke design and build including some complex design elements and custom info graphics, animated explainer video, allowing for two premium plugins (menu system and contact form plug-ins), approximately: £3600.00 +
The majority of the cost is production hours. Purchasing of 3rd party elements such as a plugin, which would typically cost £40.00 on average, is a very small part of the overall budget.
It is difficult to provide indicative costs beyond the above without defining a scope of work. For example, a small site of 10 pages might have a complex booking system and directory that requires bespoke coding, so a simple formula of X pages = Y cost would not work for in that scenario. However, the above should provide an approximate guide.
Are there cheaper ways to build a website?
We specialise in creating bespoke designs, but we are sometimes asked if there is a cheaper way of getting an online presence? In such situations we would recommend buying a pre-made website theme which AllDesignOnline can assist you with. There are limitations with pre-built themes, for example you can only work within the confines of the theme framework, however it is a quick and cost effective way to build a budget website. A typical cost might be:
Purchase of a pre-built theme, time to set up, configure and add content, approximately: £625.00
Already have a website but just need some changes? No matter how big or small, AllDesignOnline can help.
Some of our oldest clients have never had a website built by us! They do however still need changes or updates, items added or removed and for a variety of reasons they can no longer work with the website developer who created the website. This may be because the relationship has broken down or the previous website developer is too busy or simply because they can not do what is required.
AllDesignOnline are happy to work on websites that have not been built by us. There is the caveat of course that you can only work with is in front of you and it may not have been built in the most efficient or usable manor. However, that does not mean it needs to be rebuilt, nearly everything can be work around or resolved.
I need changes to my website, what will it cost?
Ad-Hoc work is charged at an hourly rate which is £42.00 p/h. AllDesignOnline will asses your changes and provide a guide price or fixed priced (depending on what is required) to carry out those changes. Whether it is straight forward adjustments to remove staff members who are no longer in your employment or additions of whole new sections, the formula is as simple as; hours needed X £42.00 = cost.
If we have missed anything above, here are some Frequently Asked Questions:
What exactly is it AllDesignOnline do?
AllDesignOnline work with you to create a new, or redesign, your existing website to enable your business to grow and improve.
AllDesignOnline can also create a new brand, or update an existing brand, for your business. Additionally AllDesignOnline provide print design for clients, e.g. business cards, advertising, mailouts etc.
Not seen a project like yours on our website? AllDesignOnline can still help you create your design.
Do AllDesignOnline work with everyone?
What makes a typical client for AllDesignOnline is not what business you’re in, the size of your turnover or how many staff you have.
Any purchase is a commitment, not matter how big or small. When you buy a service and work with AllDesignOnline it is important that there is trust and dialogue, so you know what and why something is happening and how that reflects on the project progressing. Honesty is the foundation of all productive relationships. At every stage of a project we will answer your questions and explain the steps, from pricing though to project completion.
Therefor we work with everyone, from individuals to large businesses, who feel the same.
I'm still not sure what I need or if AllDesignOnline are right for us?
If you’re unfamiliar with a process then it can be daunting or confusing, especially so with websites where there is a lot of mistrust and misinformation. Maybe you are not sure if AllDesignOnline produce the style of work you’re looking for? Or you may have specific requirements not mentioned on our website?
Any questions you have, just ask. We will give you an honest answer. If we think we’re not the right company for your requirements, we will tell you. If you need a service that AllDesignOnline can not provide, we’ll try and help you find another company that can help you.
Hopefully it is a project we can help you with, but if not, we will answer the question honestly.
You mention WordPress - do you build other types of websites?
Yes, we absolutely do. WordPress features a lot in our content because the majority of our clients either request WordPress or we recommend WordPress as it’s the best fit for their project. It generally provides the most cost effective, yet flexible solution, enabling bespoke design and content to be integrated into a robust, globally supported Content Management System (CMS).
There are some projects where WordPress is not suitable. For example where a client is running a Windows environment where the website needs to integrate into an existing system, i.e. the website needs to work with a supply chain system in the warehouse. AllDesignOnline would assess your requirements and advise accordingly. If you had a very specific requirement and we did not feel we could support that to the level you need, we would be honest and tell you, then assist you with finding the right provider who could help.
I already have a website, I just need some changes - do you do Ad-Hoc work?
We absolutely do. Some of our longstanding clients have come to us with an existing website which for different reasons, i.e. the relationship has broken down or the previous web development company are now too busy, they can no longer get updated and would just like some changes to be made rather than a website rebuild.
For this type of work we charge an hourly rate. We will asses the changes and advise of the approximate total cost (or a fixed total cost if appropriate). Read more about ad-hoc website work.
Can I just ask for some advice?
Absolutely! Contacting AllDesignOnline to discuss a website or a design project in no way obligates you to use AllDesignOnline – we hope that you will of course, but sometimes you just need to talk through a project to get a better understanding of what you need and if now is actually the right time for your business to start a project. You contact us anytime using our contact page.
